When I look back at the journey of the last 25 years, I believe JBIMS played an important role in my life. The five year stint with the Tata Strategic Management Group at Bombay House (1992-97) was quite fascinating as I was applying management principles to live business situations. It sometimes felt unreal that I was advising the CEOs of various companies on business strategy when I was just in my twenties! Alpa and I got married in 1994 and some of you might recall Mr. Ratan Tata gracing the wedding occasion.
Armed with the second Masters degree in Management from the Asian Institute of Management, Manila in 1998, I started one of the most fulfilling journeys of my career in the field of private equity based out of Hong Kong. I could relate to long term investing from my experience in business strategy formulation. I invested in private companies in Asia Pacific region (Japan, Korea, China and India) for one of the largest pension funds in the world - CDPQ. The Board memberships of UTV and Radio Mirchi gave me opportunities to come to India often between 2001 to 2004. Alpa and I were blessed with two lovely kids – Niharika in 1998 and Neil in 2002. I did a lot of globetrotting between 2004 to 2007 as I headed M&A for A.S. Watson, the retail business subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa. I was instrumental in buying health & beauty retail companies in Latvia, Turkey, Russia and France.
I relocated to India in 2008 to establish an alternate asset management business for Avendus Capital. I founded Hornbill Capital in 2014 through which I manage Hornbill Orchid India Fund, a Mauritius based long short equity hedge fund (www.hornbillcap.com). My daughter Niharika is currently studying in Grade 12 at the United World College in Pune and my son Neil is studying in Grade 8 at the Oberoi International School in Mumbai. Alpa and I love to travel and enjoy meeting people.
